Chapter Nine

Geoffrey stood in the inner bailey watching the Armstrong soldiers train. They had some skill, but it was nothing like his warriors. He’d be more than happy to leave this keep behind and head home. He couldn’t wait for Serena to see the home and life he would provide for her. He wanted to take her everywhere and experience it all again through her eyes. He wanted to introduce her to his mother and watch his mother fall in love with Serena. He had no doubt she would. His mother had an overflowing capacity to love, and Serena was in need of it.

She’d grabbed Davida after breaking their fast and left him, saying she needed to make sure there was a room prepared for Jamie and Rory when they arrived. He hadn’t seen his wife since, and he missed her. He found himself looking around for her. Nothing new, though. He’d been looking for her since the first time he’d met her. The only difference was, now he knew what she tasted like, and he knew she’d be sharing a bed with him tonight.

“Have you heard anything I’ve said?” Duncan asked then laughed when Geoffrey stared at him. “You’ve got it bad.”

“She’s my wife,” Geoffrey replied.

“You always were a lucky bastard.”

“How do you figure that?” Geoffrey scoffed.

“The girl you’ve been obsessing over, searching for, found you instead. Turns out she knew where you were all along. I’d say that qualifies.”

Geoffrey turned his gaze back to the practicing soldiers.

“I’m ready to go home.”

“God, yes,” Duncan agreed. “That’s just pitiful.” He nodded toward the men before them. “I wouldn’t mind taking Titus back with us, though. Boy has brains to go with his brawn. I think we could make a warrior out of him.”

“I think Serena would enjoy having a familiar face when I take her home.”

“I’m guessing the old woman will be going, as well. Davida.”

Geoffrey nodded. “Davida is like a mother to Serena. I wouldn’t think of leaving her behind.”

“Speaking of mothers… Have you seen the Lady Evangelina or Lady Evie, depending on who you speak to?”

“No,” Geoffrey admitted, and he found it weird the lady of the keep was nowhere to be seen. Then again, after everything Davida had shared with him, it did make a certain kind of sense. Hell, Serena’s mom might not realize what was actually occurring.

“Seems strange to me,” Duncan said.

“From what I’ve heard, she’s a strange woman.”

Anyone who could ignore a daughter like Serena, who could choose not to even know her, was a woman he didn’t care to meet anyway.

“Riders approaching!” one of the Armstrong soldiers yelled from atop the wall surrounding the keep.

“It’s the Dragon and his bride!” one of Geoffrey’s warriors called.

“He made good time,” Duncan praised as they walked toward the gate.

Geoffrey grinned as Jamie rode in with Rory firmly planted in the saddle before him. He had her wrapped tightly against him, and it made Geoffrey wish Serena was with him. Behind them were six of Jamie’s fiercest warriors.
